Preparations for Hurricane Irma

One of our amazing customer service team members (Heather) now lives in Orlando and wrote a small glimpse into her life as Hurricane Irma was approaching.

**********

I’ve been through many storms in my life just like everyone who reads this. I’ve lived in Michigan where we faced snow storms and Oklahoma where we faced ice storms and tornados. I’ve even been through the fire in Colorado with ash storms. I’ve been through even crazier storms – life storms. The storms that are unexpected and take the wind right out of you. The storm of losing loved ones…. illness that are life long… finding out a loved one has an addiction…broken bones and broken hearts… abuse…financial storms … there are probably too many to list. Through it all one thing has stayed the same. God is faithful. As I sit in my living room with tears in my eyes as I write this I can honestly tell you that is the only thing that comes to my mind when I think of all of those storms. Before you think that was a cute saying and I’m just making light of what is happening in our world let me explain a little….

Hurricane Irma

Stocking up on water while preparing for Hurricane Irma.

I’m currently sitting with my water bottle (one out of 288) surrounded by boarded windows. On my counters are batteries, candles, canned goods and random other things that I found while searching for hurricane prep list. I’ve done all the things I know to prepare including filling our bath tubs with water and putting my favorite photos and Bible in ziploc bags in totes.

Hurricane Irma

Water in the bathtub while preparing for Hurricane Irma.

We’ve moved everything around to fit our cars in the garage and removed all our outdoor items from our patios. We have random bags and bottles of water in our freezer. Even a cup of frozen water with a quarter on top to let us know if the temperature in the freezer drops to the point that our meat will go bad (thank you to whoever thought of that). Radios are set with extra batteries on top. Papers are filled out and tomorrow we will make an inventory of everything we own and the plan for our daughter if anything were to happen to my husband and I. I have to stop here just for a moment. That is painful. When someone asks if you have thought through that, it stings my mama heart so bad. The very thought of that had almost crippled me from making normal decisions. This is where I have to look back and remember the faithfulness of God. I had almost forgotten this week.

Hurricane Irma, house doors are covered

Windows and doors are covered up with small squares to keep a watch on the storm.

As most of you have heard Florida is prepping for one of the largest hurricanes we’ve ever seen. Larger than hurricane Harvey and larger than hurricane Andrew. This storm is actually wider than our state. That in itself might shake a person to think the worst. I can tell you that I really wasn’t shaken up until Tuesday when a man walked out of a store and followed me to find out how many cases of waters I have because no one could find water in stores. He wasn’t the only one I talked to about waters and other various missing supplies like bread, batteries, and canned goods that day. In a moment our city went from a vacation spot to the hunger games. This is when my faith was really starting to shake a little. The cherry on top is when the calls from loved ones started to pour in begging us to come to their houses in other states. The combination of it all was overwhelming. The moment when I allowed my fears to overwhelm me is the same moment that I walked in to my husbands office in our home and I asked him the one question that I think I’ve probably asked him a thousand times… “did we make a mistake?”. If you knew my husband you would laugh because you would be able to see the puzzling face he gave me. His eyebrow goes up and with a slight smirk that makes me some what question if he’s laughing at me or if he’s just trying to make me feel better about what I’m asking. He looked at me and calmly asked “Do you feel like we are supposed to go? “. It was in that moment that I realized I had lost myself in everyones chaos.

Hurricane Irma

Houses in Orlando are boarded up in preparation for Hurricane Irma.

In my heart I knew it was better to stay. We had both felt like we were supposed to stay actually. It’s amazing how someones words can build your faith or bring fear. The Bible says faith come from hearing and hearing the Word of God…. I think if that’s how faith works fear probably does too. We all have to be careful in any and every storm we face that we are allowing the right tv shows, radio stations and people to speak in to us. That being said my husband and I talk for a while and then we started talking about all the storms we’ve faced and how faithful God has been. In times of need some how we ended up having more than enough. In times of sickness some how we received miracles. When we were heart broken God healed the pain. He is faithful and kind! We live in a world that is broken but we can trust a God that heals the broken. He even said He is close to the broken hearted. He loves us deeply. Through this storm and all the others that I’ll face in the future I chose to remember that… He is faithful! His word is true! Please pray for Florida as our state is facing a very big storm. Take time to thank God for all of His faithfulness and remember every time He has shown you His loving kindness.

Here a few scriptures I’m standing on and continue to stand on during all of life’s storms:

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your winds until the danger passes by.
– Psalms 57:1
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;  He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person many have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all
-Psalm 34:17-19
Though I am surrounded by trouble, you will protect me from the anger of my enemies. You reach out your hand, and the power of your right hand saves me.
-Psalms 138:7
But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken.
-Isaiah 54:17

Bible Journaling + Palm Sunday

bible journaling+ palm sunday

This week we decide to use Palm Sunday as an inspiration for our Bible journaling!

Matthew 21:4-9

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

We thought this entry was a great way to reflect on the week that lead up to the  death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

A few things that you will need to do Bible Journaling:

-Bible with wide margins and room to write/draw. (Amazon has some great options)

-Fine tip pen and pencil

-Markers, colored pencils, sticker etc

How to get started:

  • Find a passage of scripture that stands out or you want to remember in the future and use that for inspiration.
  • Find keywords you can emphasize with a cool font so your entry will “pop”… look up fun fonts and try to mimic those if your having trouble finding inspiration — It also can help to pair a plain font along with a fancier one so that there isn’t too much competition on the page.
  • Pencil in your idea first so you can make changes as you go.
  • Go over your design with a fine tip pen and add any colors you may like with colored pencil, markers etc.
  • If you love washi tape and stickers pull them out bc this is your time! This is a great alternative if you don’t love drawing.

(For this post we used prisma color watercolor pencils and a mambi planner fine tip pen.)

We hope you have tons of fun recreating your own bible journal entry! Make sure to tag us @thevintagepearl and #biblejournalwiththevintagepearl so we can see what you created!

I hold you in my Heart! Bible Journaling

I Hold You In My Heart — Bible Journaling

Bible journaling is so much fun! This one is based off of the letters from Paul to the church of Philippians.

Philippians 1:3-7

“3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,

always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy,

because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart…”

A few things that you will need to do Bible Journaling:

-Bible with wide margins and room to write/draw. (Amazon has some great options)

-Fine tip pen and pencil

-Markers, colored pencils, sticker etc

How to get started:

  • Find a passage of scripture that stands out or you want to remember in the future and use that for inspiration.

  • Go over your design with a fine tip pen and add any colors you may like with colored pencil, markers etc.
  • If you love washi tape and stickers pull them out bc this is your time! This is a great alternative if you don’t love drawing.

Another fun idea is to listen to the bible as you work on your journal entry!

(For this post we used prisma color watercolor pencils and a mambi planner fine tip pen.)

We hope you have tons of fun recreating your own bible journal entry! Make sure to tag us @thevintagepearl and #biblejournalwiththevintagepearl so we can see what you created!

Sterling Silver vs. Pewter

STERLING SILVER VERSES PEWTER

Sterling Silver vs. Pewter – what is the difference

One of the questions we get asked most often here at thevintagepearl.com is “What is the difference between sterling silver and pewter”?  While this is not meant to be a definitive list we want to be able to answer this question with what most often concerns our customers.

There are a few things to consider when choosing sterling silver vs. pewter.

a classic customized initials pewter necklace
Fine pewter initials necklace

Pewter

  • Our fine pewter is unique in that it does not tarnish.
  • It is a mixture of different metals, including mostly tin, a small amount of  copper, and sometimes even has a bit of silver in it.
  • Pewter is softer than silver so it will bend or dent easier.
  • It also has that beautiful shine similar to sterling silver but it will start to naturally dull over time. You can easily bring back it’s shine with a few wipes of one of our jewelry polish pads.
  • It is a lower price point which is always nice when you can purchase a beautiful necklace for a little less, and makes it a great option for younger girls.

Sterling Silver

Precious metals like Sterling Silver will require a little more maintenance.

  • Sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time, but it is easy to clean up with one of our polish pads.
  • It has a higher price tag, but it also has a higher quality to it that makes it a piece of jewelry that you can keep for a lifetime.
  • Sterling Silver will have a brighter lustre than Pewter.

Eden’s 3v3 soccer team had the opportunity to play in the Disney 3v3 soccer tournament! Their team is called the TSC ’08 CRUSHERS (and yes, they picked their name, very intimidating.) They played their games at the Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando. Our team stayed at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, which I would highly recommend.

Merry Christmas! (the big reveal…)

Just like last year we assigned a Disney character name to label the kids presents so they had to guess which character they were… it drives them nuts not knowing and makes it a fun guessing game. Caleb guessed them all correctly and Jonah was THRILLED (sarcastic) to be a princess again (last year he was Elsa)… this year Caleb was Eeyore, Jonah was Ariel, Tessa was Olaf and Eden was Tinkerbell…

This has become a fun Christmas tradition we will continue over the years!

Merry Christmas, friends!
